Young Authors Due on February 3rd!

Young Author Time is Here!
I am encouraging each of the students to work on a young author story at home and turn it in by February 3rd to be judged among the rest of the students in the school. Information came home from Mrs. Ory about a week ago through the internet. Information about it can be found on the school website. Each child will read their story in front of their classmates, receive a blue ribbon award, and even have a possibility of their story being chosen to be performed by the WV theater students in a Brookdale assembly. Thanks for encouraging your children to be great writers!

Community Service Workers

We started researching community service workers today. Each child was able to select their favorite one and do some "extensive" research on what it takes to do this job. I have encouraged the students to do additional research at home over the weekend. If they find new information and print it up, they will be able to use this for our next writing project in class.

Field Trip

February 6th will be here before we know it. Please make sure you turn in your signed permission slip and money for our field trip to the Theater. This is an awesome trip!
In addition to our field trip on the 6th we have our k-2 music program at 7pm in the gym. Mr. Korbitz will be sending additional information home about this wonderful event. I am looking forward to hearing all the great songs!

The Brookdale 2nd Graders visited St. Patricks Residency today to spread some Thanksgiving cheer! They did a great job of singing, letter writing, and decorating tray liners for the patients there. I hope everyone enjoys their Thanksgiving!

Our Author visit by Molly Shannon was hilarious! She is a great comedian and childrens author. We hope to see more work from her in the years to come. Tilly probably has a few more tricks up her sleeve that we need to hear about! Pictures are all over the newspapers and our school blog. I will also post some personal pictures as well. Planting

Our planting day on Wednesday was a huge success. Thanks to all the rain we had the ground was perfect to dig into and plant those bulbs deep down! I will be posting pictures this weekend of our time outside.

On Wednesday, all second graders will be planting daffodil bulbs around the school. Please send your child dressed appropriately for this project. We have shovels and the bulbs ready to go! This is a cute, hands-on science experiment and experience that the kids just love. Hopefully you will get them to help out at home next time you plant!

Next Wednesday, Molly Shannon will be visiting Brookdale to promote her new childrens book, Tilly the Trickster. We read it in class on Tuesday and the kids loved it! CogAT Testing next week!

All 2nd and 5th graders will be taking the new CogAT tests next week. We will be testing on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 9:30-10:30 each morning. PLEASE arrive to school on time with a nutrituous breakfast in your tummy! Getting a great night of sleep is also a huge help when taking these tests too. Our fun run today was amazing!! 2F has raised $280 so far and we're still hoping to get to our $500 goal by the end of next week. If you would still like to get more pledges, please feel free to send them into school by the end of next week. The day was gorgeous, the kids were awesome, and it was a huge success! What’s My Bag? (1st Homework Assignment)

Your child has come home today with a lunch bag. The children have been instructed to fill the bag with 5 special items that will help to introduce themselves to their classmates. Please don’t send anything valuable or breakable. If your child has a large item in mind, they may want to draw a picture and place it in the bag instead. We will share our bags throughout the next few days and then choose one item to keep in the bag and put on display in the room. Some ideas to place in the bag may be:

o 1 piece of a collection (1 card, 1 car, 1 key chain, etc.)

o A souvenir from a recent trip

o A special notebook

o A photo

o Something related to a hobby

Last week I was introduced to SpellingCity.com. SpellingCity is a website that helps students learn their weekly spelling and vocabulary words while having fun at the same time.

As a teacher, I will put up my weekly spelling lists on Vocabulary and SpellingCity and your children can review the words, and play spelling and vocabulary games with their words to reinforce the learning process.

Here’s how to help your child master his or her spelling and vocabulary words:

Simply go to www.SpellingCity.com to see how the site works. To get started, click on “Sample Lists” and choose any list you like. Then try the Teach Me, Test Me, or Play A Game link.You can find our class spelling lists by simply clicking on “Find a List” and typing in my name, Megan Federhofer. The lists will appear and your child can immediately start using it to practice his or her words.

Many kids enjoy building their vocabulary and spelling skills with Spelling City. Please encourage your children to spend about twenty minutes, two nights in a row before their weekly test. Let’s work together as a team to ensure that your child becomes an independent, lifelong learner.

Week in 2F 10.18.10

Today we just had an amazing assembly with Paul Zelinsky, illustrator of many children's books. It was fun to learn about how he became an illustrator and to see him draw in person. We had a fire drill today to practice exiting the school safely. We are in the computer lab right now practicing our math skills. Today the red reading group will be presenting their posters on Crocodilians. We will end the week with reading to our reading buddies in KB.

This week in gym we did the climbing wall with and without the noodles. In Music we listed to major and minor music. Today we will be practicing our bell songs. In art we made cute pumpkins out of paper for the fall. We had fifth graders come down on Wednesday to help us type and edit our paragraphs we have written during writing time. You will be able to see our final paragraphs typed with pictures by the end of next week.

We have had a busy week in 2F with the book fair, walk to school day and planting bulbs. You can see pictures on the blog from both days. We are in the computer lab now typing up our paragraphs about a time we were brave. In music this week we practiced bell songs. In gym we learned how to play kickball and in art we drew cats. We are excited to have a long weekend especially since it's going to be beautiful outside!

Our Week in 2F, September 27th

We had a big week in 2F. We took our OLSAT tests on Tuesday and Thursday. They were hard tests, but we all did a great job on them. In gym we played clean up your yard, which is a really fun game. In art we made flags for our walk to school day. In music we practiced our songs with instruments. We continued to work on our rocket math tests. We have officially started our Daily 5 rotations this week too for reading. In writing we wrote paragraphs about a time we were brave. We changed desks this week and we have continued to work on being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe Bobcats!
OH -we also got to go to our first Buzy Bobcat sale! It was so fun!

Progress Reports Home TODAY!

Your child will be coming home today with their first quarter progress report. This is a report mainly about behavior and how your child responds, acts in the classroom. It really isn't about academics, but since behavior and actions in a classroom precedes the ability to learn, I want you to know how your child is doing in comparison to another second grader. Many children are checked as developing under many categories, although some are just beginning or secure in a few categories. Please discuss the report with your child.

This week we began our math switch time. It has been a fun transition for all of us on the hot days! Our star student this week is Maggie C. She will present her poster to us this afternoon. We are in the computer lab today taking a computer test. In art this week we drew pictures of things using squiggly lines, straight lines, and dots. In gym we did our running tests and played a fun game of pac-man. In music we learned a new song and played different instruments. We are very excited for back to school party at the end of the day today! It's going to be a blast!

Happenings in 2F...Week of September 13th

We just had we fire drill! In gym we have been doing fitness tests.We did curl ups,push ups,and stretch tests.In music we play instruments.In art we drew cakes.In class we had a spelling test.We like spelling tests. We took our first math test yesterday and we're taking a Social Studies test today. Lots of testing going on!!
We have now learned all five parts of the Daily 5 schedule. Ask me about them and I will tell you how we do each section.
In writing we started writing our own writer's workshop stories. We could write about anything we want...it is the best!
We are working on being Respectful, Responsible and Safe Bobcats in 2F.

Curriculum Night 2010

We hope you can join us for Curriculum Night on Thursday, August 26th. Daffodil Planting

The children had a very fun time planing their daffodil bulbs in the back area near the first grade doors last week. I know they look forward to seeing how they will bloom in the spring! I can not stress enough the importance of sending in a snack with your child everyday. 2F has been VERY lucky to have families that have donated gold fish to the class - however - this is not the norm. Please make sure your child comes with an individual snack everyday. We eat them in the morning around 10:30am.

We had an amazing Open House on Wednesday night. Thank you to everyone that made it and I hope you enjoyed your time at school. I know the kids were thrilled to show off all their hard work!
We are into February and we are looking forward to an in school field trip on Tuesday with Health World and a friendship party on Friday. I can hardly wait!
I will be sending home a letter writing project for the parents tomorrow. Since February is "friendship month" AND letter writing is our 2nd grade writing focus, I thought I'd get the parents involved. Please look for the information in your child's backpack tomorrow.

Concert

Hell0 - sorry for being so out of touch...2009 has been very busy!! We had a wonderful concert on Wednesday night. The kids looked great and their singing and bell playing was super too!!

Winer Break!

Hello 2F Families,
As our winter break approaches us I like to recap what a wonderful year we've had together so far...The "Meet & Greet", the first day of school, author visits, planting flowers, the Arboretum, Fall party, Halloween, November conferences, Stone Soup, Thanksgiving, mealworms, and we will hopefully end with the winter party tomorrow (weather permitting:))! I am sure I've left many other wonderful activities out - but these are sticking out in my mind. We've had a ton of fun and the kids have accomplished so much this first half of the year. It's been a joy teaching each student and I know we will accomplish even more in the second half of the year.
Thank you to the parents for your continued support at home. We wouldn't be this successful without you!
As for winter break I am sending home a "Winter Break Activities Booklet". YES it's optional - but I have found in the past that many parents like having something for their kids to work on during the two week break. There's a list of reading books and two different math packets. Please use as needed. If your child does complete the work - they can bring it back on January 5th and I'll go through it.
I hope everyone has an enjoyable break and the kids come back rejuvenated for a whirlwind of a second semester!! I will look forward to seeing everyone at open house if not before.

Stone Soup...YUMMY!

We had a great Stone Soup feast today. I have oodles of pictures to post on Monday to the blog. The kids did a great job trying the soup and eating up all the muffins! It was a great 2F "family" day - looking forward to many more!

1st Qtr is Over!

Today is the last day of the 1st Quarter. I can't believe it!! The kids have done a fabulous job these first eight weeks of school and I can only expect the same for the next one! As we wrap up this Friday here are a few reminders...
1. Report cards will come home on Halloween.
2. Students will be moving to new math teachers for the second quarter on Monday.
3. Conferences begin on November 4th. Yes, that is only two weeks away...YIKES!
4. With the change in the weather please make sure your child is coming dressed appropriately for recess. It's cold!

Spelling

The spelling pre-test was given again today - due to many concerns with it be given in my absence. Therefore, the appropriate list and homework will be coming home tonight. Please notice that the words this week ARE a lot harder that what we've seen so far in second grade. Practice every night and I know you'll do awesome on Friday!!

Field Trip Reminder!

We will be heading to the Morton Arboretum on Wednesday this week. This is our first official field trip in 2nd grade and we are all very excited. If you have not turned in your permission slip, please do so by Monday. Also, please remember to pack a disposable lunch and we will not be carrying around our "left overs". Lastly, please remember to be school on time (8:50am). We will be boarding the buses at 9:00 and leaving Brookdale by 9:10am. I'm looking forward to a great day outside!!

Book Report Books

2F will be writing in-class fall book reports starting on Monday, October 20th. We went to the LMC today to pick out books for the reports. The books need to be ficitional books that the kids have never read before. The only job the kids have for the book report outside of school is to actually get the book read. They have one whole week - starting today! I know they can do it!! Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your at home support!

Helping Out Pictures

Book Fair

2F will be going to the book fair Wednesday to browse at 1:30pm. We will then go again on Friday at 9:30am to purchase books. If your child would like to purchase books, please send money in with them on Friday. The book fair is also open after school today and tomorrow.

OLSAT Testing Begins Tomorrow

Math in 2F!

In math this week we wrapped up our 1st unit with a test yesterday. We have been working hard on counting money, and telling time. We've continued to work on our Rocket Math skills and tests. Next week we will begin switching for our math time. A letter will be coming home tonight to explain this in full details.

Reading in 2F!

This week in reading we focused on "Making Predictions". This was our comprehension focus for the week. We read Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon, A Worms Diary, and The Brand New Kid to help us learn more about making predictions. Next week we will work on sequential order. We continued to work in our guided reading groups as well.
